Introduction to the Dual-Enrollment Opportunity
Students at Rancho Buena Vista High School now have the chance to earn college credits while still in high school, thanks to a partnership with California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). This initiative allows students to get a head start on their bachelor’s degree.
About the SWIFT Program
The program, known as Scholars in Wellness and Innovation Fast-Track Health Programs (SWIFT), offers dual-enrollment courses that contribute to two undergraduate degrees in health and wellness. These degrees are designed to be completed in a minimum of three years, focusing on public health and human development with a counseling concentration.
A Celebration of Opportunity
On September 6, CSUSM president Ellen Neufeldt, along with leaders from the Vista Unified School District, celebrated the enrollment of 22 students from Rancho Buena Vista. Neufeldt expressed her excitement, stating, “With social mobility a part of everything we do, this program is our mission in action.”
Professional Certification and Career Readiness
Graduates will not only earn a degree but also meet the requirements for professional certifications. Public health students will qualify as Community Health Education Specialists, while human development students can become wellness coaches, providing mental health and wellness support in California.
Meeting Regional Needs
According to a San Diego Workforce Partnership report, the region requires 18,500 more behavioral health professionals. This program aims to address this demand by preparing students for careers in health and wellness.
Additional Support for Students
Students will receive summer funding for internships, career advising, employer networking, and access to guest speakers, all designed to support their career development.
Conclusion
This dual-enrollment program not only provides a pathway to higher education but also equips students with the skills and qualifications needed to thrive in their future careers.
