Officials from the Health Plan and Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend, presented by WVU Medicine, have confirmed their collaborative effort for this year’s Tough as Nails Urban Challenge, a five-mile obstacle course held in Wheeling.
Jeff Knight, CEO of Health Plan, expressed enthusiasm about the event, emphasizing its inclusive nature:
‘It’s a great community event that gives more than long distance runners an opportunity to participate. Other athletes have the ability to participate as well.’
Scheduled for noon on May 25, participants will navigate through more than 20 obstacles, celebrating the essence of Wheeling and its landmarks.
Knight highlighted the dual challenge of the event, stating, ‘It’s not just a physical challenge, but a mental one as well.’ Participants will need to climb, crawl, and carry through various terrains, making it a true test of grit.
Echoing these sentiments, Tough As Nails Race Director Eric Anderson mentioned:
‘The race is unique in that it allows runners to traverse through a variety of urban settings including factories, city parks, and parking garages.’ This year’s course will introduce new challenges alongside past favorites.
Community involvement is a hallmark of the event, with Health Plan employees actively participating through competition or volunteering, reinforcing their commitment to community engagement. Knight remarked:
‘Our employees will go out of their way to support any event.’
Jim Spanner, general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, said:
‘The Tough as Nails Urban Challenge has become a part of the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend that no one wants to miss.’ His words reflect the positive growth of the event, highlighted by enthusiastic community participation.
