President Marcos Assures Full Government Preparedness as Typhoon Leon Approaches

As the Philippines braces for the impact of Typhoon Leon (international name: Kong-rey), President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. has stated that government agencies are fully alert and prepared to respond to the disaster. Marcos emphasized that the government is ready to deploy resources as needed in response to the impending storm.

‘I assure the Filipino people that the government is ably handling all disaster management efforts. We remain in full control. Our resources and personnel may be stretched due to the impact of typhoons on multiple fronts,’ Marcos noted in a press statement.

The President added, ‘Nevertheless, we have sufficient assets to mitigate the worst impact, recover from the wreckage, and rebuild stronger than before.’

Current Weather Status

According to the latest bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Batanes is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3 as Typhoon Leon continues to strengthen. At 11 a.m., the storm was located 155 km north of Itbayat, moving northwest at 25 kph with maximum sustained winds of 175 kph.

Response and Evacuation Efforts

In preparation for Typhoon Leon, local and national government units have been placed on high alert. Governor Marilou Cayco has confirmed that evacuation efforts are underway in affected areas. Food packs have been distributed to residents for the next three days, and healthcare personnel have been deployed to evacuation centers.

Diana Rose Cajipe of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported that nearly 2,000 family food packs have been pre-positioned in Batanes, with an additional 5,500 packs on standby for transport from Pangasinan.

Military Support

Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla, spokesperson for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), indicated that military assets are on standby to assist in areas affected by the storm.

As the situation evolves, President Marcos reiterates the government’s commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of all Filipinos during this challenging time.
