According to a recent survey conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Morning Consult, nearly half of all adults in the U.S. plan to embark on a new dietary journey as part of their New Year’s resolutions.

This study surveyed 2,174 American adults and found a diverse range of dietary preferences. A significant 40% reported an intention to reduce calorie intake, while 26% showed interest in low-carb diets such as keto. Additionally, 17% are looking into intermittent fasting as part of their dietary strategies.

Interestingly, only 8% of respondents considered starting the Mediterranean diet, which is renowned for its health benefits. In contrast, just 7% expressed interest in plant-based or vegan diets, both of which have been proven effective for weight stability and overall wellness.

Roxanne Becker, MBChB, from the Physicians Committee, remarked, ‘Counting calories can be time-consuming and create a negative relationship with food for some people. Research has shown that plant-based diets are effective for weight loss without purposefully restricting or counting calories.’

Basic Nutrition

As individuals contemplate their dietary paths, Massachusetts General Hospital advises that starting with basic nutrition is key. Rather than diving into crash diets, it suggests adopting a balanced, sustainable, and enjoyable eating pattern.

This could very well align with the Mediterranean and vegan diets, rich in whole foods and delicious recipes. Becker highlighted the broader benefits of a plant-based diet, noting that it is not only effective for weight loss but also reduces risks of obesity-related diseases.

In conclusion, while the task of finding the right diet can be daunting, fostering a lifestyle change rather than seeking quick fixes is crucial. A healthy diet, combined with physical activity, forms the foundation for successful health resolutions in 2025.
