What is Apple Cider?

Few holiday tastes or aromas are as welcome as warm apple cider. Although this classic drink has been enjoyed since Roman times, its popularity has surged in recent decades, leading to a global cider market valued at over $7 billion in 2022. Experts predict it could grow to more than $11 billion by 2032.

Local sales reflect this trend. Will Gormly, owner of the Mountain Cider Company in Vermont, states, ‘Our sales have increased more than 100% in the past decade.’ He attributes this success to apple cider’s ‘fantastic flavor’ and ‘nostalgic appeal,’ noting, ‘Drinking it reminds folks of the holidays and fall activities.’ Furthermore, it serves as ‘a great coffee shop alternative for kids because it doesn’t have caffeine.’

Understanding the Preparation

Apple cider is made by crushing apples and extracting their juice. LeeAnn Weintraub, a registered dietitian, explains, ‘It’s a drink that can be enjoyed cold or hot and without any additional ingredients.’ Many prefer it spiced with cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg, enhancing its flavor.

Unlike apple juice, which is more filtered and often pasteurized, apple cider retains more pulp and fiber. Caroline Susie, a registered dietitian, highlights that apple cider is richer in nutrients due to this less processed nature.

Health Benefits

Apple cider not only delights the palate but is also nutritious. Lisa Young, a registered dietitian, explains that it retains more fiber and vitamins. Key nutrients include potassium, which aids blood pressure control, and vitamin C, essential for immune health. Additionally, it is rich in polyphenols, antioxidants that support immune function.

Considerations for Consumption

Despite its benefits, moderation is key. Gormly cautions that apple cider’s natural sugar content (around 24-28 grams per serving) can contribute to unwanted weight gain if consumed excessively. Moreover, unpasteurized versions may pose risks to those with compromised immune systems.

The Bottom Line

Whether enjoyed hot on a chilly day or as a refreshing cold beverage, apple cider remains a beloved drink emblematic of fall traditions. Its growth in popularity is a testament to its enduring appeal and nutritional benefits.
