Exploring the Benefits and Practice of Meditation

In a world that often feels rushed and chaotic, the ancient practice of meditation offers a refuge of calm and clarity. American psychologist Professor Richard Davidson has dedicated much of his career to understanding how meditation works, revealing its profound impact on health and well-being.

At 73, Davidson, who studied with a guru in India during the early 1970s, is a leading figure in the field of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He founded the Centre for Healthy Minds and the non-profit Healthy Minds Innovations, focusing on the intersection of mental health, neuroscience, and meditation.

According to Davidson, even a mere two weeks of regular meditation can lead to noticeable improvements in stress levels and concentration. He emphasizes the benefits of increased attention, stating, ‘Improvements in attention include better focus, less mind-wandering, and improved working memory.’ These insights are elaborated upon in his co-authored book, Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body.
