Improving Mental Health with Simple Strategies
Editor’s Note: This story is Part 1 of a 2-part series recapping our favorite health tips from 2024. Part 1 focuses on tips for enjoying an active lifestyle.
As the New Year unfolds, focus on mental health with practical advice from local providers. Here are key tips to support well-being throughout 2024.
Talk with Your Provider
If anxiety or depression is weighing you down, consulting with your primary care physician could be a beneficial first step. ‘Treatment often includes a combination of medication and behavioral health therapy,’ said Dr. Catherine Marmillo, a family medicine physician at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Dr. Marmillo added, ‘A lot of people are embarrassed and don’t want to go on medication. However, more than 10 percent of patients are on mood medications at some point.’ Approaching mental health proactively is vital.
Recognize Signs of Crisis
Crisis situations can trigger significant stress responses in the body, often leading to symptoms like headaches, increased heart rate, and fatigue. ‘That can be a pretty difficult place to live for a while,’ shared Molly Lotz, a licensed clinical social worker at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.
Simple actions, such as connecting with loved ones, staying hydrated, and practicing deep breathing can help. ‘If we can cue the brain to breathe deeply, it helps us feel safe,’ Lotz instructed, emphasizing the importance of these techniques.
Build a Positive Relationship with Food
Instead of setting rigid weight loss goals, Skylar Weir, a clinical dietitian at UCHealth, encourages adopting a positive outlook on food. ‘Avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad,”’ Weir advised. ‘Instead, view foods in terms of their roles: carbs as energizers, proteins as builders, and fats as protectors.’
By shifting perspectives, individuals can make more intuitive food choices, enhancing both nutrition and enjoyment. Weir encouraged a focus on ‘nutrition by addition’ where increasing the nutritional content of meals can lead to better outcomes than restrictive dieting.
Address Mental Health During Pregnancy
It’s crucial to monitor mental well-being during pregnancy. Miranda Salky, a certified nurse midwife, said, ‘Depression and anxiety can occur both during and after pregnancy,’ and it’s essential to seek help without shame. ‘One in eight parents may experience post-partum depression, and sharing concerns with healthcare providers is key.’
Take Action for Your Mental Health
Each tip serves as a stepping stone toward improved mental health in this new year. As the medical community clarifies, proactive measures can make a significant difference in overall well-being.
