Essential Health Tips for Parents from School Nurses

School nurses play a crucial role in supporting children’s health and well-being, providing valuable insights for parents to help their children thrive both in school and at home.

Colleen Russell, RN, BSN, CPN, the school nurse at D.C. Prep Edgewood Elementary Campus, states, ‘Nurses have an intuition that is hard to explain. We know much more than we say and notice much more than you realize.’

In collaboration with Andrella Adams, RN, MPH, BSN, a Community Health Nurse with Children’s School Services, they share advice on health management, medications, and more.

Russell adds, ‘We truly love our students and what we do. If we have a concern, please take it seriously. Our assessment skills are invaluable.’

Wellness Tips from School Nurses

  • Proper hand hygiene is essential. Germs spread rapidly in schools. Teach your child to wash their hands frequently — before meals, after using the restroom, and after coughing or sneezing.
  • Communicate about medications. School nurses require a doctor’s order and parental consent to administer any medication, including over-the-counter options. Adams mentions, ‘Please do not send students with medications on them.’

For any medication required during school hours, ensure the school nurse receives the proper documentation, including provider’s orders and parental signatures. Medication forms for District of Columbia Public Schools can be found here.

  • Keep your child home if they have a fever. A fever indicates the body is fighting off illness. Sending your child to school while masked with medication can lead to the spread of illness.
  • Sleep and nutrition are vital. Establish a consistent bedtime routine, limit screen time, and ensure your child has a nutritious diet for optimal performance in school.

Russell emphasizes, ‘If your child has a chronic condition, please make sure the nurse has medication and the appropriate orders at their school.’ Keeping the school informed about your child’s health conditions and any changes in their circumstances is essential.

Many schools also offer additional health services such as mental and physical health support, immunization clinics, and dental hygiene clinics. Parents are encouraged to discuss available resources with their school nurse.
