Embracing Health and Wellness Goals for the New Year in Shasta County

As we welcome 2025, many individuals in Shasta County embrace the familiar motto ‘new year, new me,’ aiming to adopt healthier habits. One of the top New Year’s resolutions is enhancing personal health and wellness.

Exploring Healthy Activities

Combat Base Shasta, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy in Palo Cedro, is providing a unique avenue for both adults and children to boost their health. Head instructor Nathan Mendes explained that the academy, a partner of Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency, also serves troubled youth.

‘I think it’s good to test yourself and try new things, get outside of your comfort zone… pushing your limits and just seeing how resilient you really can be,’ Mendes stated.

Students, like Amy, highlight the classes’ contributions to both fitness and self-defense skills, saying, ‘It’s given me a lot of confidence in knowing how to defend myself.’

Nutrition Strategies for the New Year

Beyond physical activities, Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency’s community education specialist, Anna Blasco, suggests that individuals start small when setting health goals.

‘Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walking break, or maybe it’s drinking one extra glass of water, or getting one extra serving of vegetables into your day,’ Blasco noted. ‘All of those things are going to add up to big health benefits.’

Blasco encourages forming partnerships for accountability in achieving health goals and stresses the importance of planning diets before grocery shopping. ‘Planning is going to be helpful to help you achieve those goals. If you look at what you want to make during the week, and then go to the grocery store with a list, stick to that list.’
