In the picturesque region of Galicia, where tradition blends seamlessly with wellness, new Spa Pilgrimage packages have been launched, combining the famous Camino de Santiago with rejuvenating spa treatments. This initiative aims to promote the region’s historical significance in thermal bathing alongside its renowned walking routes.
The Galician Tourist Board has partnered with thirteen thermal spring hotels to offer unique retreats, allowing travelers to indulge in both cultural experiences and spa activities. As Xosé Manuel Merelles Remy, director of the Galician Tourism Agency, states, “This healthy travel proposal is based on two of Galicia’s greatest defining features, the Camino and our thermal spas.”
The Allure of Galicia
Known as “Green Spain” due to its lush landscapes, Galicia offers over 300 hot springs, many with origins traced back to Roman times. The thermal hotels have crafted specialty packages that include a mix of hiking, medical consultations, and specialized spa treatments designed specifically for pilgrims.
Merelles Remy highlights that every year thousands of pilgrims flock to Galicia, lured by the culture and the natural beauty, stating that “the thermal waters stand out” among the region’s cultural riches.
Connecting Culture and Wellness
The Spa Pilgrimage initiative was sparked by architect Mario Crecente, who recognized the potential of combining two ancient forms of travel. By presenting a sustainable tourism model, Crecente aims to provide effortless connectivity between the spiritual journey of the Camino and the restorative benefits of thermal springs.
Each hotel participating in this initiative has developed offerings that reflect its uniqueness, including a Roman spa, a forest spa, and even a spa set on an island. There are various packages available, such as an eight-day retreat at Hotel Balnearo de Lugo, which features inclusive spa treatments, hiking excursions, and meals.
Global Launch
The new tourism concept was unveiled at the International Spa Heritage Festival in Saratoga Springs, New York, garnering attention from wellness enthusiasts and travel experts alike. Crecente emphasizes the transformative power of this experience, stating that many pilgrims describe their journeys as “transformative.”
With the growing interest in wellness travel, this initiative looks set to attract new visitors eager to explore both the natural landscape and the rich cultural heritage of Galicia.
