Delaware County Hospitals Saved from Closure

Two hospitals in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, are no longer at risk of closing, according to recent announcements by officials. On March 9, 2025, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, alongside the community group The Foundation for Delaware County, revealed a critical agreement to ensure the survival of Crozer Health, the region’s largest health network.

This agreement comes after lengthy negotiations that began as Crozer faced potential closure due to financial distress linked to its owner, Prospect Medical Holdings. Last week, the company informed a bankruptcy judge in Texas that they could only keep the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Chester and Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park operational until March 14, raising concerns about adequate healthcare availability.

Prospect Medical Holdings, a for-profit entity that acquired Crozer in 2016, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. It was later placed in receivership as state and local officials worked tirelessly to develop a sustainable plan for the hospitals.

During a pivotal meeting in Harrisburg, which lasted over six hours, stakeholders reached a consensus. Attorney General Sunday remarked: ‘I am pleased that the parties focused on how to move forward on behalf of Pennsylvanians, instead of how we got here, and worked to an agreement.’ He emphasized the importance of Crozer Health for thousands of families relying on its services.

To oversee the immediate management of the facilities, FTI Consulting has been appointed as the court receiver. Community members can stay informed about the status of Prospect-owned hospitals via a dedicated webpage created by the Delaware County government, accessible at DelcoPA.Gov/Prospect.
