Covid-19 Surge in Thailand Amid Seasonal Rise

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) in Thailand has issued a report on the Covid-19 situation for week 23 of 2025, highlighting a notable increase in cases. As of June 2, 2025, there were 10,192 new Covid-19 cases recorded in a single day, following a previous day with 18,102 new cases, bringing the total to over 28,000 new cases in just two days.

Out of these cases, 9,304 were outpatients, and 888 were severe cases requiring hospitalization. The report also confirmed one recent death, raising the total number of fatalities for 2025 to 69. The majority of deaths occurred among the ‘608 group,’ which includes high-risk populations such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, mainly in major urban and tourist areas like Bangkok, Chonburi, Chathaburi, and Chiang Mai.

Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, attributed the rise in cases to the early arrival of Thailand’s rainy season and the reopening of schools, noting that these factors often lead to increased respiratory infections. He emphasized that while most infections are mild, high-risk groups should seek immediate medical attention.

The circulating variant, XEC, was described as highly contagious but typically causing mild symptoms, similar to the flu. Consequently, most individuals recover without the need for hospitalization or advanced treatments, and there is no current need to suspend schooling or work arrangements due to Covid-19 infections.

Further guidance from health officials stresses that distinguishing between Covid-19, the flu, and common colds can be challenging. However, symptomatic treatment remains the same for mild cases, with severe cases requiring targeted antiviral medications such as Remdesivir and Paxlovid, which are readily available.

Health experts advise continuous preventive measures, including social distancing, hand hygiene, mask-wearing, and vaccination, especially for vulnerable groups. Schools are encouraged to keep students at home if multiple students fall ill but do not recommend closure of entire classrooms or schools.

The overall situation indicates that while Covid-19 remains active, its impact remains manageable with proper precautions and healthcare protocols in place, emphasizing the importance of ongoing vigilance amidst seasonal and societal changes.
