Celebrating Public Health Champions in San Diego

The county’s Health and Human Services Agency has recognized 14 outstanding Public Health Champions for their remarkable efforts to enhance the well-being of residents across diverse communities in San Diego County. This annual award, established in 2001, aims to highlight public and private collaborations that promote wellness throughout the region.
Throughout its history, nearly 500 Public Health Champions have been honored based on nominations from the community, coinciding with the observance of National Public Health Week. This year’s theme, “It Starts Here,” emphasizes that every individual has the capacity to contribute toward building healthier lives both for themselves and their communities.
Meet the Awardees
The awards are divided across five categories, showcasing various individuals and organizations excelling in public health services:
Public Health Services Awardees
- Veronica Whitehorse: A registered nurse who emphasizes disease prevention and community wellness, particularly within the American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
- Dr. Antoinette Marengo: A physician and health equity advocate providing accessible reproductive healthcare across multiple counties.
- Defense Health Agency Immunization Healthcare Division, Pacific Region Team: This team has administered over 20,000 vaccines monthly at military clinics, supporting vaccination efforts far beyond California.
- April Fernandez: A public health manager focused on enhancing border health through collaborative programs among various sectors.
- Sarah St. John: A dental hygienist and founder of All Smiles, a service dedicated to bringing dental hygiene to underserved populations.
- Amy Abrams: Co-founder of a home health agency, advocating for individuals with chronic conditions and improving emergency response for older adults.
Regional Awards
- Gabriela “Gaby” Beas Love: Supports underserved communities in accessing higher education.
- Backcountry Communities Thriving: A nonprofit organization improving life quality in rural communities through various essential services.
- David R. Shorey: A leader in public health who advocates for social justice and substance use prevention initiatives.
- San Diego Military Family Collaborative: Enhances military community integration through a comprehensive support system.
- Karen Clay: Founder of a food recovery initiative that assists community members by redistributing meals and resources.
- Fern Street Community Arts: Utilizes art as a medium to foster social change and build community.
Director’s Award
- Sharia’s Closet: Offers essential clothing and hygiene products to those in need across the San Diego region.
- Foundation for Senior Care: Focuses on the well-being of older adults and those with disabilities, aiding transportation needs significantly.
