Community Unites for Health and Wellness

The Orcas Community Resource Center was bustling with energy on April 1, as it transformed its courtyard and parking lot into a vibrant hub for health and wellness. Approximately 40 community members came together for a Health and Wellness Fair organized by the center’s Health Focus Group, demonstrating a commitment to collaborative health services.
‘We always talk about the importance of coordinating health services across our island community, but this week, we got to see it in action,’ said Patricia Benton, Resource Center board chair. She emphasized the significance of such community gatherings, stating that it showcases what is possible when local organizations unite.
The fair featured interactive stations from various partners, including San Juan Health and Community Services and the Lions Club. Attendees had access to informative booths, engaging demonstrations, and valuable health services—such as complimentary blood pressure checks offered by Dr. David Shinstrom and massage therapy from local practitioners.
Guests left the event with fresh fruit, children’s books, reusable shopping bags, and a wealth of wellness resources, reinforcing the event’s mission to foster a healthier and more connected community.
The Resource Center expressed its gratitude to the Health Focus Group members—Barb Garrett, Christianne Sinoo, Kyra Dyer, and others—who played vital roles in the planning and execution of the event, showcasing the power of local leadership in addressing health needs on Orcas Island.
This gathering exemplifies the Resource Center’s ongoing commitment to community-led initiatives. The Health Focus Group, driven by community members with firsthand experiences, actively identified and created events necessary for enhancing local health. This empowerment remains central to the Resource Center’s mission of responsive and community-driven support.
