Community Comes Together at Resource Center Health & Wellness Fair
This past Tuesday, the Orcas Community Resource Center transformed its courtyard and parking lot into a hub of health and wellness, hosting approximately 40 community members for an engaging Health & Wellness Fair organized by their Health Focus Group. The event highlighted the island’s commitment to a collaborative approach to health.
‘We always talk about the importance of coordinating health services across our island community, but this week, we got to see it in action,’ Patricia Benton, Resource Center Board Chair, stated. ‘Bringing organizations together wasn’t just a plan—it was a real-life example of what’s possible when we work as one.’
The fair showcased interactive stations from various partners, including San Juan Health and Community Services, the Lions Club, the Senior Center, and the Food Bank, providing attendees with informative booths, demonstrations like a free fire cider offering, and essential health services such as blood pressure checks by Dr. David Shinstrom.
Participants left with fresh fruit, children’s books, reusable shopping bags, and an abundance of wellness resources, emphasizing the event’s goal of creating a healthier, more connected community.
The Resource Center extended gratitude to the Health Focus Group members who made the event successful: Barb Garrett, Christianne Sinoo, Kyra Dyer, Zanetha Matisse, Karen Johnston, Jacques Olivier, Be Aye, and Josh Culp. Their dedication and vision for community wellness highlight the influence of local leadership in addressing health needs on Orcas Island.
This gathering signifies the Resource Center’s commitment to community-led initiatives. The Health Focus Group, comprised of community members with direct experiences, identified and organized the fair based on observed needs, emphasizing the importance of empowering local voices to drive health initiatives.
