In recent efforts to combat the overdose crisis, CU Boulder has made significant strides in providing free naloxone and fentanyl test strips across its campus. This initiative comes in response to both alarming drug overdose statistics in Colorado and new legislation that supports universities in distributing lifesaving resources.
Statistics and Current Trends
According to national data, there was a decline in drug overdose deaths from July 2023 to July 2024, but Colorado only experienced a modest 4.38% decrease. As tragic as this statistic is, each life lost is a stark reminder of the importance of overdose prevention efforts.
Distribution of Naloxone and Fentanyl Test Strips
Since 2022, CU Boulder has successfully distributed over 7,500 doses of naloxone and more than 10,600 fentanyl test strips. Students and faculty can find these resources available at multiple locations across campus, including Wardenburg Medical Center and various residential areas.
“We want to make sure everyone has access to these critical resources,” stated a university spokesperson. “Naloxone is a lifesaver, and we’re committed to educating our community about its importance.”
Community Support and Donations
Generous donations from organizations such as The Naloxone Project and End Overdose have played a key role in sustaining this initiative. The Naloxone Project recently donated 10,000 doses of naloxone to CU Boulder, which has helped expand the program’s reach.
Kathryn Dailey, the assistant vice chancellor of Health & Wellness Services, expressed gratitude for the support, saying, “Every contribution makes a difference in the fight against overdoses, and we’re thankful for the community’s involvement.”
