Championing Rural Wellbeing
In the heart of North Canterbury, farmer Geoff Spark is taking significant strides to promote the mental health and well-being of the farming community. With two dairy farms comprising 700 cows each and additional involvement in his family’s operation in Rangiora milking another 600 cows, Spark understands the unique challenges faced in rural life.
Involvement with Community Initiatives
Spark’s commitment to rural wellbeing is evident in his associations with both Farmstrong and the Rural Support Trust. He revealed, ‘I was shoulder-tapped to be on the Rural Support Trust, which I was happy to be involved in. I became involved with Farmstrong when I was looking for a charity to give the funds from running a triathlon on my property.’
The Essence of Community Connection
During a recent event titled ‘Harvesting Health’ in Rangiora, attended by over 140 individuals, Spark shared the importance of community connections. He stated, ‘It is really important for farmers to get off-farm, enjoy some social connection with other farmers, exercise, and adopt some good practical breathing exercises that will help reduce stress.’
Expert Advice and Community Support
The ‘Harvesting Health’ event included presentations by notable figures such as Shane Fletcher, team manager for the Crusaders, who instructed on managing peak teams, and Jo Hopkinson-Haigh, a physiotherapist specializing in stress reduction techniques. Spark exclaimed, ‘It was a really positive event that was all about providing people with tips on health and wellbeing.’
Looking to the Future
Through his efforts, Spark is not just a farmer; he is a pivotal member of his community, focused on ensuring the mental and emotional resilience of farmers in North Canterbury. As he aptly puts it, ‘Live well, farm well,’ encouraging everyone to prioritize their well-being.
