Darke County, Ohio, is a rural district with a population of nearly 52,000, situated along the Indiana border. Recently, it has become home to the LGBTQ+ Community Center of Darke County, a beacon of support for the local queer community. This center, which will celebrate its first anniversary on May 1, provides a dedicated space where individuals can gather, attend events, and find resources.
Board President Ryan Acker expressed optimism about the center’s future, saying, ‘Our center and our community have really nurtured a sense of hope.’ The center was established in response to a significant mental health crisis within the LGBTQ+ population, largely driven by anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, including bills introduced by local officials.
Addressing Mental Health Needs
Acker stated that discussions with the Darke County General Health District and the Miami, Darke, and Shelby Suicide Prevention Coalition highlighted these urgent mental health needs. ‘What we heard from the community was that there needed to be a safe place where people could go, and also a place that creates positive visibility for the community,’ Acker shared. This dialogue led to the formation of the center.
The facility offers a welcoming atmosphere, complete with a coffee bar, group rooms, and vibrant decorations. Regular programming includes LGBTQ+-friendly Alcoholics Anonymous, community social events, and healthcare resources.

Looking ahead, the center plans to expand its programs, particularly for youth, and enhance wellness initiatives. ‘Our community needs more connection,’ Acker noted, regarding recent proposals for partnerships to introduce youth programs.

Future Collaborations
Acker hopes to foster relationships with local departments, striving to create a supportive environment outside the center’s walls: ‘We are nurturing and facilitating those conversations with the sheriff’s department, the library, public health department, and Greenville Township.’
On average, 20 to 30 individuals visit the center each week, with the Winter Gayla event emerging as the most popular gathering. This annual celebration honors local changemakers who contribute positively to the LGBTQ+ community.
Acker summarized the center’s impact by stating, ‘There’s certainly work to do, but I think that we are finding that we have the ability to build supports.’
