Canadian Grandmother Breaks Pushup Record
A remarkable milestone was reached by 59-year-old Canadian grandmother DonnaJean Wilde, who recently shattered a Guinness World Record by performing 1,575 pushups in one hour. This accomplishment marks her second title with the Guinness authority, reported on November 20 by Guinness World Records.
During the event, Wilde received enthusiastic support from 11 of her 12 grandchildren, all cheering her on. One sign proclaimed, “My grandma is officially amazing!” showing the family’s pride and encouragement.
A New Record and Emotional Response
Wilde exceeded the previous record, which stood at 1,207 pushups in one hour, with a significant margin and 17 minutes to spare. Reflecting on her experience, she said, ‘I had to fight back the happy tears and emotions and keep going.’ She added, ‘I still felt quite strong and was aiming for a high number of pushups to complete in the next 17 minutes.’
Rules and Restrictions
For the pushups to be counted, each must be performed with a full 90-degree bend at the elbow and complete extension at the top. Wilde was allowed to take breaks between sets, which helped her stamina.
In a remarkable performance, Wilde managed to complete 620 pushups within the initial 20 minutes of the hour. However, as she neared the end, she faced physical challenges, stating, ‘Toward the end of the hour, my shoulder began to dislocate before popping back in.’
Inspiration for Others
Wilde’s journey offers encouragement to many. In a recorded message shared via social media, she emphasized, ‘My message is to be a believer. Choose to believe in yourself and others. Plan to attack each day and to be on the offensive side of the game.’ She further encouraged people to pursue their passions, saying, ‘Make time to do the things that you love so you can make things happen and write your own story.’
Previous Record and Active Lifestyle
Earlier this year, in March, Wilde also set a record for the longest abdominal plank among women, holding the position for an impressive 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 11 seconds. Notably, her training for that record included doing hundreds of pushups each day. She expressed, ‘I fell in love with doing pushups, just like I did planking. So, I just kept rolling with it.’
Wilde firmly believes in the importance of staying active; ‘I believe that if we stay active and have health and wellness goals, we can age gracefully and powerfully.’
