In today’s fast-paced world, finding a supportive community can often be a challenge. For many women, especially at a predominantly white institution, Black Girl Fitness has emerged as a sanctuary since its inception in 2016. This fitness club has become a place where women unite, pursue their health goals, and cultivate a sense of belonging.
Creating a Safe Space for Wellness
Black Girl Fitness offers an array of weekly events designed to cater to its diverse membership. With a variety of workout sessions focusing on different muscle groups including core, glutes, and upper body, there truly is a workout for everyone. Club members can expect to engage in both intermediate and advanced sessions, creating an inclusive environment that encourages participation.
A’Nyah Banta, a political science sophomore and the club’s social media chair, shares her journey of joining the club: ‘I just wanted to start somewhere with my fitness journey and find a space with other girls who could help motivate me to keep going.’ This sentiment highlights the essence of community that Black Girl Fitness aims to foster.
Building Community through Collaboration
The club is not only about fitness; it actively collaborates with other campus organizations to promote health and wellness through shared events. These collaborative efforts serve to introduce more students to the joys of fitness and cultivate a supportive environment.

Vice president Jalilah Carson emphasizes the importance of belonging in a supportive group: ‘Having a supportive group that is passionate about physical health — and being surrounded by people who look like you — makes a huge difference.’ This grassroots approach to community-building is at the heart of what Black Girl Fitness represents.
The Importance of Representation
With African Americans composing only 6.3% of the campus population, the need for spaces that emphasize representation and belonging is essential. Bryana Scott, the club’s president and an animal science junior, asserts: ‘It’s especially important at a PWI to find a club to be a part of because we don’t always see many people who look like us or have classes with them.’
The advice she offers to newcomers is equally insightful: ‘Joining an organization with people who look like you can help you find the friends you’re looking for and ultimately place you in the community you hope to be a part of on campus.’

Looking to the Future
The club has ambitious plans for growth that reach beyond just its membership. They aspire to inspire a new generation of young women to embrace fitness as a lifestyle. Future activities, workshops, and outreach initiatives are on the horizon as they aim to make fitness accessible and enjoyable.
A’Nyah expresses hope for the future of the club, stating: ‘I’d love to see it still growing, with the addition of a yearly event to bring even more people together.’ Their vision is not only about thriving today; it’s about leaving a legacy that continues to empower women in their fitness journeys for years to come.
Above all, the members hope that Black Girl Fitness continues to remain a strong pillar of support, ensuring every woman feels welcomed, supported, and at home in this vibrant community.
