A New Hope for South Dallas

On December 12, 2024, Bonton Farms, a nonprofit dedicated to community betterment in South Dallas, initiated a significant expansion of its services by breaking ground on a new wellness center and a mixed-income housing complex. This initiative aims to tackle the pressing issues of health care and affordable housing in a neighborhood grappling with systemic challenges.
Addressing Community Needs
Founded in 2020, Bonton Farms began as a community garden focused on providing food access. President Gabe Madison highlighted the evolving mission, stating, ‘There’s a lot of other deserts. We knew that we had to become the resource.’ The upcoming wellness center will be launched with the support of Methodist Health System and Baylor Scott & White, offering essential services such as dental care, fitness classes, and health education for residents of all ages.
A Focus on Local Empowerment
The wellness center will also feature counseling rooms and co-working spaces for local entrepreneurs, affectionately termed ‘Bonton-preneurs.’ Madison expressed the hope that this model can inspire similar initiatives in other communities. ‘What we hope is that we can be a model to be replicated in other communities,’ he said, emphasizing the potential for positive transformation through collaboration and comprehensive solutions.
Breaking Ground for Change

During the groundbreaking ceremony, which took place on December 12, 2024, Madison commented on the significance of affordable housing for residents, asserting, ‘This is Bonton being reflected in the ways Bonton wants to be reflected.’ Daris Lee, the health and wellness manager who has lived in the area all his life, expressed hope that this development will help revitalize the community from within. ‘A lot of people felt like we have been pushed back as far as we could go,’ Lee said, underscoring the locals’ desire to shape their future.
Looking Ahead
Construction on the resource center is set to begin immediately, while work on the apartment complex will commence in January 2025. This dual focus on health and housing aims to forge a healthier, more sustainable community in South Dallas.
Conclusion
Asking what this could mean for other neighborhoods, Madison concluded, ‘By showcasing that through solutions and various partners, we can create the transformation that’s needed.’
