A Vision for Community Health
The story of the long-anticipated YMCA wellness center in Bemidji is one of resilience and community spirit. Dave Hengel, the executive director of Greater Bemidji Economic Development, reflects on how the community has boldly approached this challenge over decades.
A Journey of Fundraising and Collaboration
Hengel recalls a pivotal moment when the community struggled with the limitations of traditional funding methodologies. He illustrates this through the story of Father Dale, who once humorously remarked, ‘We have all the money we need; it’s just still in your wallets.’ Today, that sentiment resonates as the community stands on the brink of realizing their dream.
With a generous $10 million contribution from Sanford Health, the vision suddenly felt attainable. The challenge shifted from mere fundraising to considering how the wellness center would be managed and operated. Insightful discussions with the YMCA of the Northern Sky led to a partnership that promises effective management and community engagement.
Clearing Obstacles
Hengel also highlights how the community has systematically dismantled the barriers that previously hindered progress. Support from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Bemidji City Council has been instrumental in addressing necessary site preparations and infrastructure improvements.
A Call to Action
Now, as the campaign approaches its final stretch, Hengel invites community members to contribute. With approximately $9.3 million raised, the community finds itself 77% toward the ultimate goal of $15 million to fully realize the project’s dream. ‘Each donation matters,’ he emphasizes, encouraging generous giving beyond comfort zones.
The Future Is Here
The wellness center is not merely a building; it’s envisioned as a transformative asset for Bemidji. It aims to stimulate economic growth, enhance community health, and serve as a central hub for fitness and wellness. With final fundraising efforts underway, the community is encouraged to rally behind this initiative and participate in shaping a healthier, more vibrant Bemidji.
