Bangkok’s MRT Blue Line Reopens After Earthquake Inspection

Prime Minister’s Inspection of the MRT Blue Line

On March 29, 2025, Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra, along with various ministers and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, conducted an important inspection of the MRT Blue Line service between Sanam Chai and Silom stations. This visit aimed to assess the readiness of the train service after a recent downturn due to an earthquake.

Relaunching Services After Earthquake

Deputy Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA), Wittaya Phanmongkol, reported on the situation regarding the MRT’s operations post-earthquake. The inspection process faced delays primarily due to vulnerabilities in the subway’s electrical system. After thorough checks, the system is now confirmed to be fully operational.

Commitment to Public Safety

To ensure public confidence, all subway lines underwent extensive evaluations of their infrastructure and operational systems. Prime Minister Paethongtarn took the opportunity to address foreign tourists, reassuring them about the safety of the services. “Everything is fine,” she stated during her discussions with visitors, who had felt the tremors but noted their ability to continue using the MRT without further concern.

Proactive Safety Measures

The Prime Minister emphasized that any part of the subway system not meeting safety standards would be temporarily closed for additional checks. She highlighted that the Pink and Yellow Lines would remain under careful scrutiny, yet assured the public of no significant issues reported in those areas.

Moving Forward with Compensation

Additionally, Paethongtarn addressed the framework for compensating those affected by the earthquake, confirming that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) would assess the damage before announcing official measures.
