Bail Hearing for Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Postponed Amid Legal Turmoil in Bangladesh

Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent Hindu monk who has been vocal in advocating for the protection of Hindus in Bangladesh, recently found himself embroiled in legal troubles. His bail hearing, which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday at a court in Chattogram, has been postponed to January 2 due to the absence of legal representation.

The monk was arrested at Dhaka airport on November 25 while traveling to Chattogram. Previously, he led rallies in Bangladesh aimed at highlighting the security concerns faced by Hindus in the region. His detainment follows allegations of sedition stemming from a rally in which he was accused of disrespecting the national flag. Chinmoy Krishna Das was subsequently denied bail and has been held in custody since November 26.

In a troubling development, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) has reported that his lawyer, Ramen Roy, was brutally attacked at his home for defending Das. According to Iskcon’s spokesperson, Radharamn Das, Roy’s condition remains critical as he fights for his life in the ICU.

Radharamn Das shared, ‘Roy’s only fault is that he is defending Chinmoy Krishna Das. His home was ransacked and he was severely assaulted.’

Reports indicate a culture of fear among lawyers defending Das, as additional attacks have been reported against legal representatives within the community. Radharamn Das raised concerns about the safety of lawyers willing to take on such cases, stating, ‘In this atmosphere of fear, we do not know which lawyer will risk his life and defend him.’

This situation has triggered protests in various regions of Bengal, with demonstrators condemning the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. As calls rally for a fair and transparent trial for Chinmoy Krishna Das increase, the Bangladesh government has yet to respond to the allegations surrounding the assault of Ramen Roy and the treatment of the monk.

In association with the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatan Jagaran Jote group, Das has actively organized rallies to shed light on alleged atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh, advocating for their rights and safety.
