In a heartwarming initiative, Irish farmer Joe Phelan, also known as ‘Alpaca Joe’, has introduced two friendly alpacas to the residents of a nursing home in Ireland. This unique form of animal-assisted therapy aims to enhance emotional well-being among the elderly.
Phelan, who transitioned from an office job to farming a decade ago, now finds a new purpose for his herd of 71 woolly alpacas. During their visits, residents eagerly await their turn to pet the gentle creatures, with Phelan noting, ‘They get to feel them. They look into their big, huge brown eyes, which are so relaxing.’
Feedback from local special-needs classes, with which Phelan also works, has been positive. ‘The impact on the kids is really positive,’ he emphasized, highlighting the broader benefits of animal therapy.

Phelan’s journey into farming began with traditional practices, but he sought new avenues for sustaining his livelihood. His innovative approach to utilizing alpacas for therapy represents a growing trend in enhancing quality of life for individuals with special needs and the elderly.
As animal therapy continues to gain recognition, Phelan’s story shines a light on the positive impact that companionship and gentle interactions with animals can have on mental health and emotional support.
