Introduction to the Housing Initiative
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced a new campaign on Thursday dubbed “Baan Pheu Khon Thai” (Houses for Thais), which aims to offer affordable housing options for low- and middle-income individuals near urban centers. This initiative seeks to alleviate the housing challenges faced by many Thais.
Development Plans and Pilot Locations
The campaign will focus on developing housing and condominium projects on lands owned by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). According to the Transport Ministry, specifications and models for these houses will be unveiled on January 20 at the Krung Thep Apiwat Central Station in Bangkok.
The project is set to launch at four pilot locations: Chatuchak district in Bangkok, the Chiang Rak area in Pathum Thani, near the Thonburi Railway Station in Bangkok, and in Chiang Mai province, as confirmed by Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote.
Details of the Chatuchak Community Project
The first location is in Chatuchak district, situated at Nikhom Rotfai Km 11, where a housing project on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road is proposed. This area features an existing housing community along with an expansive public park.
Additionally, the SRT plans to develop a mixed-use residential and commercial project on a 279-rai (44.64 hectares) empty plot, with an estimated investment of 100 billion baht, according to SRT Asset Ltd.
