Pet Ownership and Stress Relief: New Survey Highlights Bond with Pets

In a compelling insight into the bond between humans and their pets, a new global survey conducted by Mars and Calm reveals that a majority of pet owners, 58%, prefer to spend time with their pets rather than partners or family members when feeling stressed. The survey, encompassing over 30,000 pet owners across 20 countries, highlights the profound impact pets have on mental health and daily wellbeing.

The study found that pets serve as silent companions that provide comfort without the need for words. More than half of the respondents (56%) said their pets give them company during stressful moments without requiring conversation, and nearly a quarter (23%) appreciated having a pet as a non-judgmental space to express worries.

Experts like Dr. Tammie King from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute emphasize the importance of recognizing the mental health benefits pets offer, noting that ‘touch-based interactions can boost oxytocin levels in humans and help us pause, breathe, and be present.’

The survey also highlights how pet behaviors can serve as cues for healthy habits, encouraging owners to take breaks from work, worry less, spend time outdoors, and unplug from screens. For example, 78% of owners said their pets remind them to pause and step away from work or chores, often daily.

Dr. Chris Mosunic from Calm added, ‘Small moments of calm with pets can significantly improve our overall wellbeing. Their presence can serve as a quick reset in our busy lives.’

As part of this partnership between Mars and Calm, a series of pet-inspired content will be released to promote relaxation and reflect the mutual benefits of the human-animal bond. They are also inviting pet owners to share their stories through a social search and participate in an interactive quiz to identify their pets’ wellbeing superpowers.
