Tragic House Fire in Queens Claims Three Lives and Injures Ten

A devastating house fire in Jamaica Estates, Queens has claimed the lives of three individuals and left a fourth in critical condition. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) confirmed the fatalities occurred during an early morning blaze on April 20, 2025.

The fire broke out around 1:40 a.m. at 87-25 Chevy Chase Street, overwhelming the first and second floors of the home. Firefighters encountered multiple obstacles, including blocked exits and makeshift walls within the residence, complicating their efforts to combat the flames.

FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito highlighted the substandard living conditions, stating, ‘These were all living spaces. The means of egress were substandard—exits blocked, stairways blocked.’ He further elaborated on the unusual layout, mentioning a wall dividing the kitchen, which likely contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Emergency responders reported that among the injured were four firefighters and four civilians, all sustaining minor injuries.

Concerns Over Illegal Conversions

The scene of the fire brings to light ongoing concerns regarding illegal conversions within residential properties. The Department of Buildings (DOB) revealed that since 2020, it had received multiple complaints about the home, but inspections were impeded four times due to access issues.

A survivor shared that the landlord charged approximately $400 a month for a bed in shared living conditions. The DOB had previously issued violations for illegal apartment conversions in 2010 and 2016, emphasizing a long history of noncompliance.

As the investigation continues, a vacate order has been issued for the property.

Community Reactions

Neighbors expressed their shock and concern over the incident. Deo Karan, who witnessed part of the fire, recounted: ‘We heard screaming also. I saw the shadow of one man trying to escape.’ Another resident, Sadhu Jaspel, described the desperation of those trapped inside, saying, ‘One guy jumped and the second guy jumped from the second floor.’

Local leaders, including Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, remarked on the tragic nature of the incident, calling it a ‘horrific scene.’ Many victims were recent immigrants seeking better opportunities, illustrating the need for improved housing safety standards.

This tragic event has once again highlighted the critical importance of ensuring safe and compliant living conditions within residential communities.
