Community Gathers for Alzheimer’s Fundraising Gala

Desert Willow Golf Resort never fails to enchant with its spectacular scenery and tranquil setting. On March 27, a perfect balmy desert spring evening, around 200 guests gathered on the patio to mix and mingle before moving inside to enjoy a wonderful meal and, more importantly, to raise funds to combat one of the fastest-growing mental and physical afflictions that seniors face today.

Thanks to co-founders Dominick A. Calvano and Pat Kaplan, support is available not only for those affected by conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia, but also for caretakers and families. These conditions impact entire families and can persist for many years.

The theme of Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley’s annual fundraising gala was “Endless Possibilities.” As both Kaplan and Calvano explained to guests, it is through partnerships that we unlock the possibilities for a promising future. Both expressed gratitude to the dedicated community partners, local businesses, cities, organizations, and compassionate donors, many of whom were present at the event.

In just eight years, this Palm Desert-based nonprofit has served over 10,000 attendees through support groups, club journeys, music and art programs, certified dementia training, health and wellness classes, assessments, and classes for meaningful conversations with the cognitively impaired.

Asking for donations is never an easy task. However, in this community, a small gift can make a significant difference. Thanks to the generosity of the Auen Foundation offering matching gifts up to $50,000, this goal was reached swiftly, showcasing the community’s kindness.

Dr. Esmaeil Sebti, a local neurologist and leading expert in dementia and Alzheimer’s care, received the Edie Keller Leadership Award for his unwavering commitment to patient care and significant advancements in early dementia detection.

The live auction featured several exciting items, including a five-night stay for two in Puglia, Italy; a stay at the Stoller Family Estate cottage along with wine tastings; and an 18-carat white and rose gold diamond tennis bracelet.

Always remembered at such events is Edith Finn Keller, a co-founder of ACV who passed away in 2019. The award in her name honors passionate community leaders, including previous recipients like Lisa Ford and Dr. Christopher Hancock.
