Excitement for Summer: Voices from the University of Alberta Community

As summer approaches, students at the University of Alberta are buzzing with excitement, eager to embrace the warmer weather and engage in diverse activities that the season brings. From outdoor adventures to cultural experiences, here are some reflections from students.

Terrence’s Love for Nature

Terrence expressed his enthusiasm for the river valley coming to life again. He stated, ‘The river valley turning green again! I love spending time in the trees with my dog; the sun is lovely.’ He appreciates the outdoor freedom facilitated by the absence of heavy layers and enjoys exploring the various geological formations in the river valley and the rock garden on North Campus.

Marlena’s Camping Adventures

Marlena is looking forward to her camping trips. ‘I love setting up the tent, cooking over a fire (especially roasting marshmallows!) and waking up to birds instead of an alarm clock.’ For her, being surrounded by nature is a relaxing retreat from everyday busyness, and she is excited about hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, and stargazing.

Ishan’s Study Abroad Excitement

Ishan’s plans include a study abroad program at Copenhagen Business School in Denmark. He noted, ‘I’ve always wanted to pursue an exchange program and am finally going to complete one in my final semester as an undergraduate student at U of A.’ Sharing his eagerness, he mentioned looking forward to the food, culture, and the enriching experiences awaiting him in Copenhagen.

Yann’s Outdoor Exploration

Yann is enthusiastic about spending time outdoors in Alberta this summer. He commented, ‘After a busy school year, I’m excited to go on some hikes, visit national parks, and maybe even go camping with friends.’ For him, the summer presents a perfect opportunity to unwind, enjoy nature, and create joyful memories before the new school year begins.

Mel’s Return to the River Valley

Mel shared her longing for the river valley, saying, ‘Since I moved back to Edmonton at the end of August 2024, it’s been a long time since I’ve spent a whole summer here.’ She plans to engage in numerous activities such as cycling, walking, and running across various trails. Furthermore, she looks forward to the bustling festivals in Edmonton including the Fringe, Heritage Days, Taste of Edmonton, and FreeWill Shakespeare.

Jeremy’s Peaceful Campus Experience

Jeremy enjoys a calm summer at U of A’s North Campus. He stated, ‘I really enjoy spending time there in the summer when it’s relatively quiet, the trees are leafy and all of the flowers are in bloom.’ Residing nearby, he plans to climb in the WCC, work out in the HFLC, or relax with a good book outside in Quad.

As these students gear up for a summer full of adventure, exploration, and personal growth, it’s clear that the season holds much promise for mingling with friends, embracing the beauty of nature, and making cherished memories.
