Students, faculty, and staff of Grinnell College came together on April 13, 2025, in the Harris Center to mourn the loss of Julian Sahlin, a 28-year-old first-year student from Sunnyvale, California. In an email sent to the college community, President Anne Harris and Vice President of Student Affairs JC Lopez conveyed their deep sorrow, stating, ‘It is with deep sadness that we write to inform you that we have learned of the tragic death of Julian Sahlin.’
During the memorial gathering, Dean for Health and Wellness, Terry Mason, expressed the profound sadness that accompanies the loss of a member of the Grinnell family. Following his remarks, Dean of Religious Life and Chaplain/Rabbi, Sarah Brammer-Shlay, hosted an open mic session, allowing students, faculty, and other community members to share their memories and experiences regarding Sahlin’s impact on their lives.
Friends described Sahlin using words such as ‘funny,’ ‘kind,’ and ‘loyal.’ One student even shared an excerpt from Sahlin’s application to work at Pedal Grinnell, which highlighted his passion for bicycles, problem-solving, and helping others. Brammer-Shlay reflected on the immeasurable emotions surrounding Sahlin’s passing, encouraging community members to utilize the college’s health resources, including counseling services available through Student Health and Wellness and the Center for Religion, Spirituality and Social Justice (CRSSJ).
The email from Harris and Lopez also discussed how grief can manifest differently for individuals. They wrote, ‘Grief can be experienced in many different ways. In the coming days, for some, engaging in classes and work will provide comfort and meaning; for others, it will be impossible to do so.’
In continuing support of the community, the CRSSJ will hold a weekly grief drop-in support space every Monday at 4:15 p.m. in the Religious Activities Room. All members affected by the loss are encouraged to attend. Additionally, resources for all students and faculty are readily available online.
In closing, Harris and Lopez emphasized, ‘Please take the time and space you need for yourself and with each other. Campus partners are here for you.’ The S&B plans to publish a commemorative piece honoring Julian Sahlin’s life. Community members wishing to share memories are encouraged to contact the student newspaper.
