The federal government has recently terminated the visitor status of several international students at Wayne State University (WSU) and a number of other universities across the country. Under this directive, four students at WSU found themselves without valid immigration status after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security enacted these changes without prior notification.
In a statement made by WSU President, Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, it was revealed that the university discovered the visa terminations after a thorough check of its Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. Dr. Espy emphasized that the affected students did not receive any prior notification regarding this major change, leading to confusion and uncertainty.
The implications of this action extend beyond WSU. Other institutions, including the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Central Michigan University, have reported similar cases where immigration records were altered without prior notice. This has left many international students scrambling to understand their legal status in the United States.
Ari Harris, a spokesperson from Central Michigan University, expressed concern, stating: ‘This is of course, is very frightening for those students and the reasons that they were terminated are not always clear to them or to us.’ She confirmed that the university cannot reverse these terminations and affected students will have to either re-apply for admission or leave the country.
The Department of Homeland Security has yet to provide a comment on this situation, leaving both universities and students seeking clarity on the matter.
