Georgia’s Youth Challenge: 25 Million Minutes of Movement
Only 18% of Georgia’s children between the ages of 6 and 17 are meeting the daily recommended amount of exercise. To combat this alarming statistic, health advocates in Georgia are launching an ambitious initiative known as the ’25 Million Minutes of Movement Challenge.’ This campaign aims to promote physical activity among the state’s youth.
The Importance of Physical Activity
Jennifer Owens, president and CEO of HealthMPowers, highlights the connection between physical activity and emotional wellness. In her words, ‘If you’re having a down day, got anxiety because of a test coming up or some friend problem, let’s get out, let’s move our bodies.’
The initiative calls on Georgians to collectively pledge to engage in 25 million minutes of movement throughout 2025, thereby fostering healthier bodies and minds. This challenge is being introduced through schools, daycare centers, and community groups.
Addressing Obesity Among Youth
Moreover, Owens emphasized that the habits formed during childhood play a crucial role in shaping lifelong health. In Georgia, a staggering 35% of adults have a body mass index of 30 or higher. Owens noted, ‘We know that inactivity then translates into adolescence and adulthood, and that is ballooning our obesity and overweight rates.’
The Wider Benefits of Movement
Physical movement and proper nutrition are essential in creating connections between mental and emotional health. Owens stated, ‘This could potentially be transformative in terms of how we raise up this next generation.’
