Graduate Student Council Elects Commencement Speakers

At the recent general body meeting of the Graduate Student Council (GSC), Akashleena Mallick GS, a master’s student in public health, and Melaine Ferdinand-King GS, a doctoral candidate in Africana Studies, were elected as commencement speakers for the upcoming ceremonies.

The election process involved the nominations committee selecting three candidates for each position from a pool of self-nominated individuals. Notably, only two candidates were present for the doctoral commencement as one finalist withdrew prior to the meeting. Both speakers delivered excerpts from their planned commencement speeches, showcasing their readiness and enthusiasm for the ceremony.

Upcoming Elections and Wellness Initiatives

A highlight of the meeting was GSC President Kevin LoGiudice’s announcement regarding the upcoming elections for various executive board positions. The candidate posters for the GSC executive board election have been made public, with positions including chair of communications, chair of technology, and co-chair of social events still accepting applications. The elections are set to take place during next month’s general board meeting.

In an effort to promote student wellness, Jean Jerome GS, GSC chair of diversity, equity, and inclusion, announced a partnership with B-Well Health to create new wellness stations across campus. These stations will provide resources for graduate students and will be stationed at the Graduate Student Lounge, River House, and other popular locations.

Additionally, Sofia Verba GS, GSC chair of student life, reported on the installation of a new refrigerator in the Graduate Student Lounge. This fridge will store items for social events, while the older smaller fridge will be designated solely for the graduate food pantry.

With these initiatives, the Graduate Student Council is actively working to enhance the overall experience and well-being of graduate students on campus.
