St. Lucia Launches Exercise Programme for Seniors
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs in St. Lucia has unveiled a structured Seniors Exercise Programme, initiated in collaboration with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF). This initiative aims to foster physical activity and wellness among older adults in the region.
The programme caters to the unique needs of elderly individuals, offering a variety of low-impact exercises that enhance flexibility, balance, strength, and cardiovascular health. Additionally, it emphasizes mental well-being and community engagement, recognizing the importance of social interaction for successful aging.
As this pilot phase commences, several homes for the elderly across the island have been selected to participate, allowing health officials to monitor the program meticulously, collect valuable feedback, and implement necessary adjustments prior to a potential national rollout.
Naomi Grandison, Family Life Educator at the Bureau of Health Education, highlighted the significance of gentle movement for seniors. She stated, ‘Today we had a low-impact exercise. These exercises are to help with our overall health. We did hand exercises, neck exercises, and leg exercises, all aimed at keeping joints limber and muscles strong. Exercising doesn’t need to be fast; consistency matters more for reducing chronic diseases and physical discomfort.”
The exercise programme also includes educational components aimed at raising awareness about the crucial role physical activity plays in disease prevention and promoting mobility.
‘We had a brief talk to explain the benefits of movement,’ Grandison continued. ‘Even slight daily activity can significantly contribute to seniors’ overall health and strength.’
Participants and staff have shown enthusiasm for the initiative. Elizabeth Stephen, Assistant Manager at the Cornerstone Humanitarian Society, expressed positive sentiments, saying, ‘The programme was very interesting and much needed. The residents really enjoyed it and were very engaged. It’s a fantastic initiative and I hope it continues in more homes.’
Andrea Alcide, Program Development Officer at the Elderly Affairs Unit, emphasized the careful selection of homes for the pilot phase. ‘We approached various homes and chose those eager to participate, hoping this response will pave the way for more homes to join the exercise scheme, so we can reach more seniors.”
This initiative represents a meaningful step towards promoting healthy aging and aligns with St. Lucia’s broader strategies for preventive healthcare, as the Ministry and its partners strive to enhance the quality of life for all senior citizens in the community.
