Kaiser Permanente to Construct Oregon’s First Fully Electric Hospital

The Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center is embarking on a transformative project with the announcement of a new hospital tower. This facility will be the first fully electric hospital in Oregon, significantly reducing the facility’s carbon footprint while minimizing reliance on fossil fuels.

Wendy Watson, regional president of Kaiser Permanente of the Northwest, remarked, ‘Since opening its doors in 1975, Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center has been a center of care excellence and innovation, where our doctors, nurses, and staff save lives, bring new lives into the world, and help patients navigate everything from minor procedures to the most complex heart surgeries. This significant upgrade to our campus will take us into the future of health care, where we look forward to providing leading-edge, compassionate care to our community for the next 50 years and beyond.’

As the Sunnyside Medical Center prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025, it continues to play a crucial role in the health of the Portland metro community. With a dedicated team of 2,300 healthcare professionals, Sunnyside manages tens of thousands of patient visits annually, alongside thousands of surgeries and deliveries of over 2,000 babies each year.

The medical center houses specialized services including neurosurgery, adult cancer care, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, and the Northwest Center for Heart and Vascular Care. In recognition of its excellence, Sunnyside Medical Center was applauded by Healthgrades as the sole hospital in Oregon and Washington to receive the America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery Award for an impressive 10 consecutive years.

In preparation for the new hospital tower, Kaiser Permanente will replace the current tower with additional parking spaces, walkways, and outdoor areas, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Kaiser Permanente operates two hospitals serving Oregon and Southwest Washington, with the Westside Medical Center in Hillsboro being the other facility, which was inaugurated in 2013.
