Chiang Mai Faces Critical Air Quality Issues, Ranks Fifth Worst Globally

Chiang Mai’s Air Quality Crisis

On Monday morning, Chiang Mai was highlighted by the IQAir website as having the fifth worst air quality among international cities. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at a concerning level of 166 at 7:50 AM.

This ranking places Chiang Mai behind several cities noted for pollution, including Kathmandu, Nepal, which saw an AQI of 237, Delhi, India at 183, and Yangon, Myanmar at 170. Lahore, Pakistan also matched Chiang Mai with an AQI of 166.

IQAir is an online platform operated by the Swiss technology company IQAir that specializes in air quality monitoring. The platform uses a color-coded system to indicate varying levels of air quality based on the AQI.

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such air quality levels can lead to serious health complications for residents and visitors alike. Health authorities are urged to take action to mitigate these air quality issues, which threaten public health.

The local government is being pressured to address these concerns by implementing stricter pollution control measures to enhance air quality and protect public health.
