Community Coalition Efforts
Thrive Excelsior functions as a coalition, connecting leaders and residents from diverse sectors, including healthcare, education, business, local government, and nonprofits to enhance the quality of life and life expectancy in the city. The coalition focuses on four critical areas: health and wellness, housing, economic vitality, and community engagement.
Health Improvements and Initiatives
The report states that between 2019 and now, the city has experienced a 15.45% decrease in chronic disease diagnoses and a 1.8% increase in annual health checkups this past year. Programs like the Family Care Series and community ‘Lunch and Learns’ have improved health education, while collaborations among health agencies have enhanced access to care. The Thrive Health and Wellness Task Force, which has a booth at the local Farmers Market, serves as an interactive platform for health outreach.
Housing Developments
In the housing sector, Excelsior Springs has seen a 7% reduction in suboptimal housing conditions since 2018, positioning the city below state and national averages. This year, 19 vacant properties were revitalized, with 18 additional properties undergoing renovations. A tax abatement initiative has facilitated $4 million in improvements downtown, while more than 50 new housing units are being developed, including the Flats at Coach Crossing, which aims to cater to senior adults.
Economic Growth and Employment
Economic indicators signal positive trends as well; the median income in Excelsior Springs has surged by 16.3% since 2018. A new job board has been established to better connect residents with work opportunities. Moreover, the city secured a competitive proposal to host the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference, bolstering local business efforts.
Community Engagement and Optimism
Community engagement has remained robust, with 80% of residents rating the quality of life as good or excellent. Since its inception, the Citizens Leadership Academy has graduated 27 residents, with predictions indicating this number could double this spring. Many graduates have stepped into leadership roles within the community. Survey findings indicated a notable 16% increase in residents who believe that the community will see improvements in the next three to five years.
