NIU Students at WellBatavia Festival
Ten NIU Doctor of Physical Therapy students showcased their dedication to community service and wellness initiatives at the seventh annual WellBatavia Festival on June 8. The festival, which aims to promote health, wellness, and community engagement, offers a variety of activities and workshops focused on physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Community Engagement
“We are thrilled to have NIU students on board for the WellBatavia Festival,” said Sarah Greenhagen, assistant clinical professor of physical therapy at NIU. “Their energy, passion, and dedication to community service are invaluable assets that enhanced the festival experience for everyone involved.”
Greenhagen mentioned that the students, along with two faculty members, contributed to the event’s success in various ways.
Roles and Responsibilities
“Through volunteering efforts organized by the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Student Association and the NIU Outreach Committee of the School of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders (AHCD), students played an integral role in various aspects of the festival,” Greenhagen said. “From setup to performing walking and balance screens, discussing dimensions of health and wellness with attendees, and pediatric speech language screenings, they played a key role in the event.”
Impact on Students
The involvement of NIU students reflects the university’s commitment to fostering civic engagement and instilling a sense of responsibility towards the community. By actively participating in events like the WellBatavia Festival, students have the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in real-world settings while making a positive difference in the lives of others.
“The WellBatavia Festival proved to be a great opportunity to learn and view healthcare holistically,” said DPT student Trevor Laffin. “Discussing fitness with individuals and identifying possible barriers that prevent active and healthy participation in their community has helped me better understand general areas that healthcare providers can make a difference in a population.”
Conclusion
Greenhagen said the festival serves as a platform for collaboration, education, and empowerment, bringing together individuals and organizations committed to advancing the well-being of the community. With NIU students actively involved, the festival leaves a lasting impression on attendees, inspiring further initiatives for positive change.
“We believe in the power of community and the importance of promoting wellness in all its forms,” said Greenhagen. “Our participation in the WellBatavia Festival is not only a chance to give back but also an opportunity to learn and grow as individuals dedicated to making a meaningful impact.”
