LSU Promotes Wellness During Tiger Wellness Week

In a proactive effort to enhance student wellness, Louisiana State University (LSU) is celebrating Tiger Wellness Week, aimed at reminding students about the importance of health and available resources on campus.

This initiative, coordinated by the Wellness and Student Support Department at the Student Health Center, includes various activities, giveaways, and events promoting wellness resources. Rachel Hoover, assistant director of health promotion, explained, ‘So with our Dimensions of Wellness Fair that we did Monday, that highlighted all of these campus resources that maybe students didn’t know about.’ She emphasized the fair’s purpose: to showcase the extensive support resources available at LSU.

Exploring the Dimensions of Wellness

The Student Health Center uses a model featuring ten dimensions of wellness – including physical, emotional, social, and environmental wellness – to help students reflect on their well-being. ‘Wellness is more than just, ‘I don’t feel sick,’ or, ‘I don’t need to go to the doctor,’ Hoover remarked, explaining the holistic nature of wellness and highlighting the importance of comprehensive health awareness.

One highlight of Tiger Wellness Week was the ‘Planting Positivity’ event hosted in partnership with the NAMI Collegiate Peer Program. This event focused on the emotional and environmental aspects of wellness, allowing students to engage with resources while also participating in a fun and creative activity.

Students could take home free succulents and customized flower pots, with graduate assistant Ella Marrus noting, ‘A lot of times students don’t know what’s available, and most resources are free. So we do this just as a way to spread awareness and do something nice for the students.’

Encouraging Engagement and Proactivity

Despite the efforts to create engaging events, Hoover acknowledged the challenge of getting students to participate. She stated, ‘Getting students to show up for things can be a challenge. We try to make it fun, engaging and have free food and giveaways.’

The overarching goal of Tiger Wellness Week is to equip students with the tools they need for proactive wellness management. Hoover concluded, ‘Wellness can be something you can be proactive about by reaching out for help and asking about resources.’ For more information on wellness and student resources, students are encouraged to visit the Student Health Center’s website or make an appointment.
