Record High Freshman Retention Rate at UW-Superior: A Look at the First-Year Experience Course

After its successful launch in Fall 2024, the newly redesigned first-year experience course at the University of Wisconsin-Superior has made a notable impact, showcasing an impressive jump in retention rates to 90 percent. This significant milestone reflects a commitment to supporting first-year students in their academic journeys.

The course was revamped by the Health and Human Performance Department, focusing on providing science-based health and wellness information while helping students develop a sense of social belonging on campus.

The engaging lesson plans, crafted in collaboration with various campus partners, have equipped students with essential skills for academic success, fostering habits that promote a productive college experience.

‘The redesign of the HHP-102 course has allowed our first-year students to see that UW-Superior wants them to be successful and that there are services in place to help them,’ said Kim LeBard-Rankila, chair of the Health and Human Performance Department. ‘Combining campus services with lectures on health and wellness helps students self-assess their behaviors and strive for optimal health. Retention is about students feeling seen, heard, and cared for.’

The curriculum includes practical strategies for time management, stress reduction, and self-care, laying a robust foundation for students’ academic and personal well-being. Facilitating connections to critical campus resources has been a vital aspect of this initiative, with instructors playing a key role.

‘You could see and hear the ‘ah-ha’ moments as students shared their transition experiences,’ remarked Jen Bird, associate Dean of Students. ‘I had students make appointments with me after that class, specifically mentioning that they came because they had met me and knew our office could help.’

The HHP 102 course is offered every semester, both on campus and online, and is a requirement for all majors, ensuring that every first-year student has the opportunity to benefit from this critical support.
