Raising Awareness on Obesity Risks

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) recently observed World Obesity Day by launching an awareness campaign about the risks associated with obesity. This initiative is part of a global movement, commemorated on March 4 since 2020, aimed at promoting awareness about obesity and its related health issues.

Dr. Sarah Rashid Musa, a community medicine specialist and head of the Wellness Centre at Rawdat Al Khail Health Centre, stated, ‘This year’s theme, *Changing System, Healthier Lives*, highlights that obesity is a complex issue requiring a multifaceted approach rather than just individual efforts.’

The campaign stresses the need for collaborative changes across various sectors, including healthcare, environmental factors, and public policy. It calls for a communal effort to adopt healthier lifestyles and implement policy reforms to address obesity.

As part of the celebrations, the Wellness Centre conducted health screenings to raise awareness of obesity risk factors. The event featured an awareness booth providing brochures on healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and dietary guidelines during Ramadan.

The health screenings involved assessing vital signs, calculating Body Mass Index (BMI), measuring waist circumference, and conducting blood sugar tests. Dr. Musa noted that these screenings are structured in phases, allowing participants to receive consultations with healthcare professionals who discuss the implications of their measurements.

Dr. Musa remarked on the importance of personalized recommendations based on individual health goals, which encompass various lifestyle factors such as nutrition, sleep, and physical activity. This comprehensive approach aims to empower individuals to engage actively in their health management.
