Wheels of Wellness Initiative Launched in Copeland
A new initiative called the “Wheels of Wellness” is taking essential support services on the road, catering to the needs of community members in Copeland, Cumbria, as preparations continue for the opening of a new charity hub.
Mobile Support Services for Fitness and Wellbeing
The iCan charity, which aims to improve individuals’ fitness and wellbeing, is launching this initiative. Soon to establish their permanent base at a former bank in Whitehaven, the charity is proactively engaging with the community through mobile support services before the main facility opens.
Phil Stout, the community engagement co-ordinator for iCan, stated that the “Wheels of Wellness” is already seeing positive responses. “It’s all about getting out into the community and speaking to people, especially in hard-to-reach places,” he explains. Recent sessions held in Gosforth have included activities like mini-trampolining and chair-based exercises, targeting local residents who may struggle to access fitness options.
Addressing Accessibility Issues
Recognizing that some individuals lack adequate transportation, Stout and his team have directed their research towards areas of low mobility. “Some people don’t have buses or trains nearby or their own cars,” he noted. The mobile van not only draws attention with its bright design but serves a vital function by bringing wellness directly to those in need.
Mental Health Focused Activities
In addition to fitness sessions, mental health is a significant focus. Drop-in sessions scheduled at Whitehaven’s Senhouse Centre this month and next will provide attendees with critical support ahead of the official opening of the Hope Haven hub on King Street. This facility aims to provide daily mental health services alongside additional support for housing, financial difficulties, and addiction recovery, in collaboration with various partner organizations.
A Vision for the Future
David Storm, associate director for the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne, and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, stressed that this is just the beginning. “People will start to see us popping up in more places over the next few months,” he noted, encouraging community members to look out for the distinctive green and purple branding representing their services.
Conclusion: A Call to the Community
The “Wheels of Wellness” initiative embodies the spirit of community support, emphasizing accessibility while fostering engagement through innovative outreach strategies. What new wellness activities do you hope to see offered in your area?
