Building Community through Walking
Since its establishment in February 2024, Fredericksburg Girls Who Walk has seen substantial growth in its membership and participation in monthly events. The group was founded by Fredericksburg native Elizabeth Martin, who sought to replicate a sense of community she found in a walking group while living in St. Petersburg, Florida.
From Florida to Fredericksburg
Martin’s experience led her to create a similar environment in Fredericksburg. ‘I realized how much I was going to miss the weekly walks with those women and thus Fredericksburg Girls Who Walk was born,’ Martin shared. The group’s aim is to promote friendship and health among local women.
Diverse Events for All Interests
Fredericksburg Girls Who Walk organizes a range of activities beyond walking, including happy hours, book clubs, and craft sessions. Through these events, Martin states, ‘The role of Girls Who Walk is to foster a community where women of like minds and similar interests can form meaningful friendships.’
Connecting Locally
With over 3,200 followers on social media, the group has hosted four events already this new year. Club member Dee Burk remarked, ‘It was really cool to meet new people.’ The group has also created partnerships with local businesses, enhancing the variety of activities available.
Utilizing Technology for Connection
The group maintains a communication channel using GroupMe, which enables members to stay connected and form subchannels based on shared interests. ‘GroupMe was a vital part for bringing and keeping that community together,’ Martin expressed.
Looking to the Future
As Fredericksburg Girls Who Walk continues to grow, Martin is keen on expanding the group’s reach to nearby areas, stating, ‘A year of watching so many women meet has motivated me to keep going with it.’ This initiative not only promotes health and fitness but also strengthens community bonds among women in the Fredericksburg area.’
