Concerns Over Thai Durian Exports

Thai durian exports are encountering serious hurdles after the General Administration of Customs of China mandated stricter checks on the Basic Yellow 2 lab test results for imported fruits. A source from the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry disclosed this information to the Thansettakij newspaper.
New Import Regulations
The Chinese customs checkpoints nationwide have received orders to reject any imports of Thai durians that lack the proper lab test documentation. Reports indicate that durian shipments to Nanning Wuxu International Airport have already faced rejections due to this new requirement.
Understanding Basic Yellow 2
Basic Yellow 2 is an organic compound often used in the manufacturing of fabrics, paper, leather, and house paint. According to the World Health Organization, it is classified as a group 2B carcinogen, raising health concerns that may have prompted these regulatory changes.
Future Trade Discussions
To address these issues and ensure continued trade relations, Rapibhat Chandarasrivongs, the director general of the Department of Agriculture, noted that the situation surrounding Basic Yellow 2 will be a topic of discussion in an upcoming meeting led by Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat.
