In light of the recent wildfires devastating Los Angeles, Santa Barbara has stepped up to support the youngest victims of these disasters. Cold Spring Elementary School is hosting a free pop-up day camp for children aged 6-16 who were evacuated due to the fires. This camp, designed to provide a nurturing environment, will be extended to January 13 and 14, operating from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The initiative aims to offer a safe haven where children can experience fun and structured programming that promotes healing during these challenging times. Activities planned include arts, music, and sports, providing a much-needed break from the stress associated with evacuation.
Originally scheduled for just one day, the camp’s continuation has been warmly welcomed by families in need. According to the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness, trauma-informed counselors will be present to support the children throughout the camp days.
Cold Spring School is collaborating with various community organizations and the national nonprofit Project:Camp, known for aiding children impacted by disasters. Project:Camp has previously organized similar camps in areas severely affected by calamities, such as Hurricane Ian in Florida and wildfires in Maui.
“We understand that the uncertainty and stress following an evacuation can be overwhelming for families,” shared Project:Camp on their official website. “Our camps provide an essential respite for children, allowing parents the opportunity to focus on recovery.”
The camp will take place at 2243 Sycamore Canyon Road, Santa Barbara. Families interested in registering can contact the school directly at (805) 969-2678. Additionally, for ongoing mental health support, the Santa Barbara County Behavioral Wellness Access Line operates 24/7 at (888) 868-1649.
