UN Women Launches Initiative to Enhance Women’s Health in India’s Tea Sector

The Call for Proposals

UN Women is actively seeking project proposals aimed at improving the health and safety of women working in the tea sector in Assam and West Bengal. This initiative is geared towards building the capacities of key stakeholders, including women workers, management, local governments, and community organizations.

Advocacy and Support

Working towards ending violence against women, UN Women advocates for better access to multi-sectoral services that ensure safety, protection, and recovery for women and girls facing multiple forms of discrimination.

Current Program Overview

The initiative forms part of a broader program being implemented across five Indian states designed to strengthen partnerships in the tea, spice, cotton, and textile sectors to enhance women’s wellness.

Focus Areas of the Project

  • Creating Gender Champions in 10 tea gardens to focus on:
    • Health, wellness, and safety
    • Financial and digital literacy
    • Awareness of government schemes
  • Involving participants such as women workers and community members in capacity building.
  • Establishing women’s wellness clubs within model gardens with structured activities.
  • Designing wellness materials to assist local agents of change.
  • Coordinating with garden management to integrate wellness initiatives effectively.

Funding and Eligibility

The proposed budget for this initiative is between INR 1.52 crore to 1.59 crore.

Eligible organizations must have at least five years of experience in program implementation and demonstrable work in the tea sector.
