Introduction
This evening marked the final Action Meeting of the Philadelphia Board of Education for the 2023-2024 school year, with the Board reviewing and voting on key items including expanded learning opportunities, school-based health and mental services, professional development, and capital investments.
Expanded Learning Opportunities
The Board authorized the District to continue operation of Out of School Time (OST) programs in collaboration with the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Children and Families. These programs offer enrichment, engagement, and student growth opportunities centered in student interest, social-emotional learning, skills acquisition, and relationship-building.
School-Based Health Centers
The Board approved the District to work with service providers to offer school-based medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare services in select schools. These centers are an evidence-based intervention to increase health and education equity.
Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS)
The Board authorized the District to work with mental health services providers to include individual therapy, group therapy, care coordination, and family support. IBHS is designed to address the needs of children by providing trauma-informed and evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
Curriculum-Based Instructional Coaching and Professional Development
The Board approved the District to engage vendors for instructional professional development and coaching to support K-12 curriculum implementation. This aims to ensure every student performs on or above grade level in ELA.
Capital and Facilities Investments
The Board approved capital improvement projects totaling almost $9 million, including interior door and window replacements at James G. Blaine Elementary School and ADA bathroom modernizations at George W. Childs School and Martha Washington School.
Charter School Authorizations
The Board renewed several public charter schools including Ad Prima Charter School and Laboratory Charter School of Communication and Languages. They also denied a revised new charter application for Global Leadership Academy International Charter High School.
