Surgeon General’s Alcohol Warning Resonates With Younger Americans Against Rising Alcohol Consumption

On January 4th, 2025, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an alarming warning regarding the risks of alcohol consumption, particularly emphasizing its increased correlation with cancer. This announcement appears to resonate most with younger generations who have already been gravitating towards non-alcoholic beverages like mocktails and juices.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy suggested that Congress consider updating warning labels related to alcohol consumption risks. Despite this, there is uncertainty surrounding potential legislation changes as drinking patterns shift among the younger population.

Consider Brooklyn resident Amy Hudson, who, due to chronic migraines developed in 2021, reduced her alcohol consumption from several times a week to less than three times a month. Hudson stated, ‘Mocktails have become a way for me to enjoy social events without the adverse effects of alcohol. I appreciate their ability to include healthy ingredients.’

Statistics from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reveal that, in 2023, only 49.6% of Americans aged 18 to 25 reported alcohol use in the last month, a significant decline from 59.6% in 2013. This trend aligns with comments from Sean Goldsmith, CEO of The Zero Proof, a leading non-alcoholic beverage platform, who noted, ‘More people are realizing that drinking alcohol is not good for them.’ This is particularly evident during ‘Dry January,’ a month when many opt to abstain from alcohol after the holidays.

Public health officials, including the American Medical Association, have long warned about the cancer risks associated with alcohol consumption. As stated in their latest report, ‘Despite compelling evidence, many in the public remain unaware of these risks.’

Several professionals in the health industry acknowledge the cultural shift, with many younger people pushing back against the ‘compulsory alcohol culture’ seen at social events. Salesperson Sara Martin from Los Angeles remarked on mocktails being a viable alternative at work parties, stating, ‘It took extensive public awareness to link cigarettes to lung cancer, but labels are a starting point for change.’ The Surgeon General’s warning is a step towards addressing the health challenges posed by alcohol consumption among the youth.
