Cholera Outbreak in Tak Province

The low-scale outbreak of cholera, an infectious bacterial disease, in Tak province on the border with Myanmar has come under control, according to the Thai Public Health Ministry. As of Wednesday, there have been no new patients reported and no fatalities.

Thailand had been on high alert following a cholera outbreak in Myanmar, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals and infected approximately 300 others in late December.

Details of the Outbreak

Since December 21, Tak province recorded four cholera patients—two Thais and two foreigners—with three additional asymptomatic individuals. Fortunately, all cases have been treated successfully, as confirmed by Dr Suphachok Wechaphanphaesat, the regional public health inspector-general.

Preventative Measures Implemented

“Continuous monitoring and prevention of cholera must still be maintained, especially during the New Year festival when people gather to share meals,” said Dr Suphachok. He highlighted that this time presents a higher risk for disease transmission due to hygiene concerns.

The health authorities have implemented several strict measures to combat the outbreak:

  • Fresh markets and public restrooms must undergo daily disinfection, and vendors must adhere to sanitary regulations.
  • Regular disinfection of facilities at government offices, schools, and religious places is encouraged.
  • The waterworks agency must maintain necessary chlorine levels in the tap water.
  • Individuals who are infected or suspected of infection must undergo testing and possible quarantine.
  • Education campaigns on prevention measures against cholera are being conducted to raise awareness in the local communities.
